I recently had my eye-ware repaired at Pearle Vision. The quality of workmanship was so poor that I find it necessary to wave off anyone who may be contemplating a repair of this type. My advice is try it yourself before there is further damage.
First. Pearle Vision met all its obligations. The glasses were beyond warranty and the clerk warned me the repair might be unacceptable. The deal was; if the repair passed muster I would pay $30, else nothing. I paid nothing.
Here are the pictures of the result.
The following are not facts, but opinions. They have to be since I did not record the eye-ware damage before the attempted repair and did not witness the repair activity itself.
The break was a clean "pop", a failure of the weld between two flat surfaces. The joint broke clean and straight. Before I decided to bring it to Pearle Vision I considered fixing it myself.
The fix. It appears the joints were not cleaned or fluxed, nor was there any fixturing. Note the alinement, lack of wetting and oxidation of the solder. Where a solder paste would have worked well, it appears solder was delivered off a roll. Note solder everywhere.
I'm not shaking down Pearle Vision. If I decide to replace the frame I'll cough up the $100 they charge for a new frame. (I don't have much of a choice. I made my bet and lost). It's just that... look at this mess. I have a hard time believing a professional shop could *** something like this". (And this was their "best guy") The clerk was embarrassed when she handed them back to me/. When I asked if she was intending to charge me for this, it was a quick "No"!.
It may be that repairs of this type are difficult and this is truly the best that can be had by a professional". I don't think so;.
Pearle Vision has been copied on the site/. Should they have any comments I'd be happy to post them.. Again, they met all their obligations!. This is not a complaint... it's more like a ripley's believe it or not. 129d1ef
